Pune : Motorcycle-borne assailants on Saturday shot down two local Shiv Sena leaders in broad daylight, hours after the result of a civic bypoll in the area was announced, police said.
The incident happened at around 5 pm on Saturday in the Shahunagar area of Kedgaon in Ahmednagar. The commercial establishments downed shutters soon after stray cases of stone-pelting were witnessed, the official added.
“Sanjay Kotkar (35) and Vasant Anand Thube (40) were killed after they were shot from point blank range by two men on a motorcycle,” a police official said.
The Ahmednagar police have arrested 12 suspects in the case including NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap. 2 more MLAs from the same area have been charged with the murder of Sanjay and Vasant.
Sanjay and Vasant were travelling near Kedgaon when they were shot from a close range and then attacked with a sharp weapon.
After some time, one of the accused, Sandeep Gunjal surrendered at Parner Taluka police station. He submitted the murder weapons, a sharp object and a revolver. Gunjal accepted killing the duo due to personal vendetta and denied any MLAs connection in the murder.
Later at night, police detained NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap on charges of hatching the double murder, while the other two MLAs, Arun Jagtap and Shivaji Kardiley have been booked for hatching the murder.
Police sources say that Sangram Kotkar, son of Sanjay Kotkar, alleged that all of the three MLAs (two NCP MLA and one BJP MLA) had threatened his dad with dire consequences for helping the Shiv Sena candidate in the recently concluded Nagar Municipal Corporation bypolls.
When NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap was brought to the SP office, his supporters ransacked the window panes and carried their leader on their shoulders shouting slogans.
27 people have been booked for ransacking the SP office and attacking police on duty, whereas 4 other people have been arrested for the double murder.
Overall, around 82 people have been booked, out of which 26 have been arrested and rest are said to be absconding.
Among the absconders, 2 accused are elected MLAs. MLA Arun Jagtap belongs to NCP, while MLA Shivaji Kardiley belongs to BJP.
It is believed that the three accused MLAs are close relatives and they were against any of the party fielding an opponent candidate against their relative Vishal Kotkar, who is a member of Congress party.
The Municipal bypoll result was a very close contest with Vishal Kotkar getting 2306 while opponent Sanjay Kotkar, the one who was murdered, received 1830 votes. So, the victory margin was just 476 votes.
If the relatives and Shiv Sena party workers from Nagar are to be believed then this murder is a result of political rivalry and animosity.
Shiv Sena leaders Deepak Kesakar, Divakar Ravatey and Ramdas Kadam are in the city to look into the matter and make sure that the accused are arrested. Additional DG Maharashtra Bipin Bihari is also in the city.
