Chikkamagalur (Karnataka) : Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, along with Mr. Pramod Muthalik (Sri Rama Sena) and in the presence of 5 Swamijis, conducted sacrificial fires and puja at the Datta Peeth situated in the Chandradrona hill, Chikkamagalur. This puja on the 22nd of October, 2010 was held on the occasion of the Datta Mala Abhiyana (campaign).

  • The responsibility of conducting the puja at the Peeth for the Datta Mala Abhiyana was with the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, which included the Ganapathi puja, Sathya Datta Vrat and Datta homam (sacrificial fire). The puja was conducted by Mr. Harshavardhan – Mrs. Tara under the guidance of Mr. Vishwanath Deekshith, on behalf of the Samiti.
  • The Datta arati was rendered by Ms. Shruti and Mr. Prashanth Javagal, members of the Samiti.
  • Pamphlets on ‘Save Datta Peeth, Save Dharma’ were distributed by the Samiti
  • A protest was held against the Government which has failed to provide maintenance and repairs to the cave which collapsed over 2 years ago, and also for not making provisions for Hindus to worship Datta there.
  • Sanatan’s divine books and ‘Hindu Chetan’, an almanac, were distributed to the devotees and people of different organisations present there, in order to awaken them to Dharma.
  • A signature campaign was held to pressurise the Government into saving Datta Peeth.
  • The petition was immediately handed over to the District Commissioner to be passed on to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, along with the request that the plea be honoured.
  • A large number of the Samiti’s members from Hassan, Chikkamagalur, Javagal and Belur congregated at the Datta Peeth for the Datta Mala Abhiyan.
  • Journalists were present when the Samiti members from Hassan were to leave for Datta peeth.

Snippets

  • When the puja and sacrificial fires were being conducted, devotees present called out slogans hailing Datta.
  • Within moments of the devotes having left the area, metal sheets put up to serve as a temporary shelter flew off their frame (in the absence of any strong wind) and landed near the place where the puja was conducted. No one was hurt, but had this happened while the puja was in progress, it would have had resulted in many devotes being injured, and also the puja would have had to be stopped abruptly.
  • Just as we reached Datta Peeth, our vehicle (in the parking lot) started moving toward a precipice and stopped around 30 feet on the incline. It had to be pulled up with the help of a crane. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time.

Comments by the police on the Samiti: After the puja, when the Samiti members cleaned up the place, the policemen stationed there exclaimed that ‘These people (the Samiti) are not like other organisation, they are great !’

Other campaigns on this occasion

  • The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti participated in a press conference along with Mr. Rama Sena, on occasion of the Datta Mala Abhiyana.
  • On 18-10-2010, the district Commissioner of Chikkamagalur was submitted a petition to immediately conduct repairs in the sacred cave, and to make allowances for Hindus to worship the Datta paduka during the Datta Mala Abhiyan and also throughout the year.
  • This event was covered by the press, and the news (along with photographs) appeared in periodicals like Vijay Karnataka, Prajavaani, Hosadiganta, Girivaarte, Janadhwani etc.

Spiritual Experiences

During the sacrificial fire and puja, a prayer kept repeating within me that a Datta Temple should be constructed there. I also had a vision of a white marble statue of Lord Dattatreya and a temple in the place where we were conducting the puja. (Later, the Swamijis and Mr. Muthalik took an oath to construct a Datta Temple in data Peeth.)

I felt the presence of Lord Datta throughout, even after having returned home.  Also, even though the weather was quite cold, I never felt the chill.
