A Bangladesh war crimes tribunal convicted and sentenced an Islamist party leader to death on Thursday, raising fears of a repeat of clashes between police and protesters after fellow suspects were condemned to death earlier this year.

At least 27 people were killed in clashes across Bangladesh between police and Islamist group Hefajat-e-Islam, which demanded that the Government enact an anti-blasphemy law and hang atheist bloggers.

Fanatics attacked innocent Hindu temples, homes and shops of Hindus in four districts in Bangladesh. Since Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee was handed down a death sentence for war crimes in February, dozens of hindu temples, houses and shops of non-muslim minorities across the country have been vandalized torched and looted.

Religious bigots vandalised five more Hindu temples and torched idols in Bogra and Bagerhat early yesterday. The Hindus did not disclose the names of the attackers for lack of security, AH Azam Khan, president of Gabtoli upazila unit Awami League, told The Daily Star.
