Govt. to seek public opinion on anti-Superstition Act
27 June 2007
Mumbai: It has been reliably learnt that the joint review committee has taken a unanimous decision to call for opinions, suggestions and objections from members of both the Houses (Legislative Assembly and Council) so also from public by 30th July 2007.What is bill?
The proposed Act by the Government recommends a ban on performing religious rites and rituals so also following different traditions and customs of Hindu Dharma (Eradication of Maharashtra Black Magic and Undesirable and Dreadful practices Bill, 2005) leading to controversy.
Shri. Ramdas Kadam, Leader of Opposition, Shri. Dattaji Nalawade, Ganapatrao Deshmukh, Sudhakar Paricharak, B.T. Deshmukh, Kapil Patil, Gurunath Kulkarni, Vallabh Benake, MLAs, Shri. Chandrakant Handore, Social Welfare Minister, Shri. Anant Kalase, Chief Secretary and concerned officials were present in the meeting.
Strictures against Atheist Anti Hindus
Opposition leader, Shri. Ramdas Kadam raised a strong objection to the proposed Bill claiming that there were lot of shortcomings and mistakes in the Bill. He informed that Prof. Shyam Manav has said that under this Act, Satya Saibaba can be arrested. Many words have not been defined in the said Bill. Shri Kadam directly asked that as the Bill has been drafted by those who don't believe in existence of God and are atheists, why should people like us, who believe in God, accept the Bill? He said that the government can not be run on whims and fancies of two persons but it is necessary to take into account opinions of everyone concerning the Bill. MLAs of Ruling parties and independents supported him by saying that due to Shyam Manav and Dabholkar, such mess was created.
Decision to seek public opinion
As the Bill has been sent to the joint Committee, it has to take some decision. It was, therefore, decided to call for opinion from MLAs of both the Houses so also of public by publishing an advertisement to that effect in the newspapers and the joint committee can later take a decision based on the said findings. Till 30th July, therefore, opinions will be collected and segregated and meeting of the joint committee will be held thereafter.
Bill may get postponed
It is therefore, now certain that in the forthcoming monsoon session, the above Bill will not be discussed.
