Suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist Shahzad Alam on Saturday (February 6) has confessed to Delhi Police's Special cell that he had shot Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma in the Batla House encounter in September 2008. Alam was arrested from the Sanjarpur village in Azamgarh. Earlier, a Delhi court sent Shahzad to police custody till February 12 to allow investigators to probe his alleged role in serial blasts of September 13, 2008 in the national capital.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja remanded Shahzad to custodial interrogation till February 12 on the plea of Delhi police's Special Cell that they wanted to quiz him to ensure arrest of his co-accused and to recover the arms and ammunition. The accused was produced in the chamber of CMM Baweja. Earlier, he was brought before Metropolitan Magistrate Surya Malik Grover, who sent him to judicial custody till February 20, as the Crime Branch of Delhi police submitted that they did not require him for further interrogation in the case relating to the Batla House encounter of September 19, 2008.
Earlier, the court had remanded Shahzad, who was arrested from Azamgarh on February one by Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Terror Squad, to three days police custody. The Crime Branch is investigating the Batla House encounter of September 19, 2008, which took place a week after the serial blasts here which claimed 26 lives and left over 135 injured. Police claimed Shahzad and Junaid alias Ariz, who were allegedly involved in the serial blasts, had escaped from Batla House in south Delhi here where suspected IM terrorists were holed up.
