The case of allotting insignificant place for Shivaji Maharaj in the textbook by NCERT

As a part of statewide agitation HJS is going to conduct protests near Shivaji Maharaj’s statue at Shivaji Park, Dadar between 4.30 p.m. to 6.30p.m. on 13th March 2009.

Muslims all over the country follow the ‘futwah’ issued by their Maulavi pertaining to matters related to their religion. Hindus should also unite during this time of crisis when the existence of Hindu Dharma is in danger. Shri. Ramesh Shinde, the spokesperson of HJS has made an appeal to all Hindu brethren to come together and protest against the Government. One can take it as a lawful ‘futwah’ for protection of Dharma and join the agitations in large numbers.

Mumbai: Text books and curriculum set by NCERT are taught to students from various States in the country. In this curriculum, history related to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is given just in 4 lines without publishing his picture whereas 60 pages are devoted to history of Mughals who invaded this country and tried to destroy Indian culture. It is not just a matter of curriculum but it is a ploy of Congress to mislead future generations. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has, therefore, started a campaign to foil the attempt of the Congress and to stop insult of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj demanding withdrawal of the curriculum set by NCERT. The agitations have been started in two States viz. Maharashtra and Goa.

State-wide agitations against NCERT in Goa!

Mapusa (Goa): The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) commenced its statewide agitation by holding demonstrations at Mapusa. It warned that if the government does not withdraw the said book immediately then this agitation will be intensified and assume a nationwide form. At this time, protest placards against the secular government and the N.C.E.R.T. were put up at the venue of the demonstration. Likewise, slogans were also shouted against them. A collective burning (holi) program of the pages of the said book was conducted.

This demonstration was conducted in front of the half statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj near the Maruti temple at Mapusa. At this time were present Shri. Jayesh Thali of the HJS; Shri. Ramesh Naik, Chairperson of the Marathi Rajyabhasha Prasthapan Samiti; Prof. Anil Samant; Shri. Shivprasad Joshi, Chairperson of the Hindu Mahasabha for Goa State; Capt. (Retd.) Agitations against NCERT in Panvel, Books burnt!

Panvel (Maharashtra):  ‘Dharne’ agitation was organized at Panvel between 10 and 12 in Shivaji Chowk. Thereafter a representation was handed over to the Deputy Collector, Shri. Telavne and assistant Police Inspector, Shri. Gore. Symbolic ‘Holi’ (burning) of the text book, ‘Hamare Ateet’, containing the distorted History was performed in the presence of, Raigad District Chief Secretary of ‘Shekatari Kamagar Paksha’; Shri. Balaram Patil, Ex. Mayor; Shri. J.M. Mhatre, City Head of Shivsena; Shri. Sunil Thakkar, District Chief Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha; Shri. Jivan Pitale, Shri. Tushar Jadhav, Haribhaktaparayan Shankar Maharaj Haravale and Haribhaktaparayan Narayan Maharaj Mahadik of Varkari Sect; Hindu Janjagruti Samiti’s coordinator of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad Districts, Shri. We do support this agitation. The students who study this History Book now are going to occupy different posts in the government later; hence it should be opposed. Since students have to study the History of Islami attackers like Afzalkhan, Aurangzeb and others, they have lost their enthusiasm. A spark is kindled by the Samiti in order to get the History book changed and it would spread like fire in no time.

Shri. Nanda Oza Director of RSS in the District said on this occasion that the History that congress is teaching could be changed if Hindus unite.

Haribhaktaparayan Mahesh Maharaj said, “Instead of teaching History of Dharma oriented (Dharmapradhan) Shivaji Maharaj, Congress is teaching the history of the Mogal Kings; hence this torture should be stopped.”

Shri. Harish Mokal of Karnala Telivision said that, it is very unfortunate that we have to resolve to agitation on Shivjayanti Day itself. Congress is not paying any heed to the opposition regarding the distorted History of the Mogals who had tortured Bharat. We would express our contempt for the Congress through Karnala Telivision.

In Sangali District, representation submitted in 5 places 

Sangali (Maharashtra): HJS submitted representations at 5 places in the district viz. Sangali, Miraj, Ishwarpur, Vita and Jaisingpur for withdrawal of NCERT curriculum. Members of various youth organizations were present in large numbers during submission of the representations; in all 133 devout Hindus joined the delegation.

Kolhapur (Maharashtra): Demonstrations were staged by HJS at 11.00 a.m. in Shivaji Chowk against anti-Hindu curriculum. S/Shri. Babasaheb Bhopale. District-coordinator of  HJS, Madhukar Nazare, Suresh Chavan, Ajay Nagare, Subhash Chavan, Deepak Masekar, members of HJS, Shiv Sena leaders like S/Shri. Rambhau Chavan, Sujit Chavan, Raju Yadav, Bajarang Dal zonal Head Shri. Sambhaji Salunkhe, Shri. Hindurao Shelake of Hindu Ekata Andolan and Dr. Mansing Shinde, Shivanand Swami, Dr. (Mrs.) Shilpa Kothawale of Sanatan Sanstha were present on the occasion.

Demonstrations in Mumbai

Mumbai: Demonstrations were held near statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivaji Park, Dadar between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. About 60 persons revering the King participated in the demonstrations. Signatures were also taken from passersby opposing insult of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. HJS will be submitting representation enlisting their demands to the Chief Minister, Education Minister, District Officer and Human Resources Minister of the Central Government.

Satara (Maharashtra): Demonstrations were staged in front of the District Collector’s office against NCERT. Representations were given to the Tehsildars at Wai and Koregaon. Smt. Vijayatai Bhosale of Pratapgad Utsav Samiti joined the demonstrations at Wai.

Agitations against NCERT in Sindhudurg

Sindhudurg (Maharashtra): HJS took out a ‘Naam-dindi’ march to the office of District Collector for their demand to stop ‘Islamization’ of our History with immediate effect. The march started from Oros - phata near the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The ‘Dharma-dhvaj’ with the sign of “Om’ depicted on it was first worshipped at the hands of Shri. Shridhar Rane, member of HJS. Shri. Rane garlanded an equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The march started with blowing of a conch amidst raised slogans hailing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and ‘Har Har Mahadev’. There were banners on display in the march saying ‘The Government teaching history of Muslim sultans, might start teaching history of Kasab and Afzal in future’, hoardings giving information on distortion of history, its adverse effects etc. The march culminated in a meeting in front of the Office of District Collector.

Shri. Manoj Khadye of HJS addressed the meeting and Shri. Sandip Gawade of HJS read out the representation to the people before submitting it to Shri. Vikram Kumar, the District Collector. There is a demand for immediate withdrawal of the controversial portion of history from NCERT’s text books seeking attention of the State Government in the matter for inclusion of true history in the curriculum, has been made in the representation.

The Government is trying to show off its love for Chhatrapati by erecting his statue mounted on a horse back in the Arabian Sea spending millions of rupees and on the other hand, it is planning to teach history of Adilshah, Kutubshah and Afzal Khan etc. misleading today’s youth so that they do not know the true history of our great national heroes. Shri. Khadye warned that the Government will have to face the wrath of nationalists and righteous people of this country if text books giving such distorted history are not withdrawn immediately.

Representation submitted at Chiplun

Chiplun (Maharashtra): Shri. S. N. Palshetkar, the zonal officer was submitted a representation, for forwarding it to the State Government, that demands withdrawal of text books teaching wrong history. A copy of the representation was also submitted to Smt. Murudkar, Tehsildar and local Police Inspector.

Shri. Palshetkar assured to forward the representation to the State Government which is signed by 325 devout Hindus. The representation was submitted in the presence of Shri. Narayan Chavan of Shree Sampradaya, Shri. Kishor Kadavekar of RSS, Shri. Suresh Shinde and Mrs. Vimal Patil of HJS and Mrs. Sangita Khole, Shri. Jitendra Sawardekar of Sanatan Sanstha.

Shreerama Sena to take active part in HJS agitation against NCERT – Shri. Pramod Mutalik

Vengurle (Maharashtra):  Shri. Pramod Mutalik, the All India President of Sriram Sena informed the representatives of ‘Saam’ and ‘Star Mazaa’ TV channels that his organization would be participating in the agitation started by HJS against NCERT for distortion of history through text books and the agitations would be held all over the country; NCERT officials would be ‘gheraoed’ and will be made to change the portion, else, the Organization would even go to Court.

Pune (Maharashtra): Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) made a demand today to omit the distorted history from text book of N.C.E.R.T. Agitations were held from 4.00 p.m. in front of the office of the District Collector. HJS will be holding such agitations all over the State after the beginning from Pune. In the coming 2 days, different modes of agitation like demonstrations, marches, protest rallies etc. will be used to seek an explanation from the government.

Many leaders like Shri. Rambhau Parikh, former city-chief of Pune for Shiv Sena, Raju Yadav of Pratapgad Utsav Samiti, Chandrashekhar Shinde of Lal Mahal Utsav Samiti, Satish Agrawal of Maratha Sangharsha Samiti, Army Section, Sunil Jadhav of Ganeshotsava Committee, Mrs. Anjali Joshi of Hindu Mahila Raksha Mandal, Mrs. Archana Chandorkar of Sanatan Sanstha besides Shri. Surendra Mahajan, Girish Dhumal, Sunil Ghanavat, Hemant Shinde of HJS participated in the agitation with other devout Hindus.   

In N.C.E.R.T’s text books, the brilliant history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is given only in 4 lines whereas many pages have been devoted for invasions of Mughals. It is an insult of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and students are taught distorted facts. A demand has, therefore, been made by HJS, on the eve of the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivji, to omit such material from the text book. A delegation of HJS later, submitted a representation to the District Collector.

In the text book set for the VII standard on the subject of ‘History’, National Center for Education, Research and Training (NCERT) has covered the history related to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj only in 4 lines without even publishing his picture; but there are 60 pages devoted to matter not only on Mughal Rule but also praising Mughal invasions. Detail News about Agitations

Mumbai: In the history textbook published by NCERT for the 7th standard, only four lines have been allotted for history of Shivaji Maharaj while in the same text the history of Mughals stretches upto 50-60 pages! HJS has launched its agitation against such ‘operation green’  of history since  last 6 months; however the government has not taken any cognizance of that and hence to draw its attention again and for demanding an early action in this connection,

HJS has decided to launch statewide intense agitation on Shivjayanti Day that is on 13th March. This will be in the form of protest marches, sit-ins, fasts and rallies. This was stated by HJS’s coordinator for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts Shri Shivaji Vatkar in a press conference held at Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh . On this occasion Dr Uday Dhuri, coordinator for Mumbai region and Mrs Varsha Thakar were also present.

The curriculum prescribed by NCERT is always controversial. Sometimes this curriculum describes our revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh as Terrorists while at other times the history is presented in a distorted fashion. In the 7th standard history textbook for the current academic year majority of the pages out of total 154 have been sacrificed for information about the Mughal and Muslim kings who invaded our Hindustan. On the other hand Chhatrapati Shivaji who fought with the Mughals and established Hindavi Swarajya has been allotted only four lines for his history. In one place he has been called singularly. What is more, there is not a single picture of Shivaji Maharaj who was from 17th century in this textbook which is otherwise full of pictures of Babar, Akbar who were from the 16th century!. This indicates the insignificance given to Shivaji Maharaj. Similarly in the history of Rajputs there is no mention of Maharana Pratap.

Mrs Varsha Thakar who is a post graduate in history and past principal of J.J. Girls’ High school said,” Aurangzeb had charged the Hindus with Jiziya taxation while imposing Shariyat laws. All the Muslim rulers committed countless atrocities on Hindus. Therefore it is a very wrong way of hiding the fact of history and glorifying the Muslim history just for the appeasement of Muslims with a eye on their lump sum votes.” Shri Vatkar said,” The same central curriculum is taken up by most of the schools in Maharashtra and a wrong and distorted history is being impressed upon lakhs of students. Therefore we demand that this distorted portion in the text books of NCERT be immediately removed. The government will have to face the wrath of Nation loving public if it does not intervene promptly for giving the true history of Hindustan its right place. This agitation will continue till the changes are made in the textbook.”

‘ It is likely that the government which gives insignificant importance to history of Shivaji Maharaj and is involved in glorification of the invaders may hereafter introduce lessons connected with Osama Bin laden, Saddam Hussain, Dawood Ibrahim  and Ajmal Kasab in the textbooks. To prevent such event all Hindus should actively participate in this agitation.’- Shri Shivaji Vatkar, HJS’s coordinator for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts.

Maharashtra Government absolves itself of the responsibility stating that the matter falls in Center’s jurisdiction!

During the winter session of the assembly a resolution was submitted to the Government when a rally was taken to assembly. Shri Rana Jagatsingh who received the resolution on behalf of information and pubic relations department, had promised that he would ask the concerned department to promptly look into the matter. Therefore as a follow-up measure when contact was made at Mantralay for 3-4 times, the government of Maharashtra absolved itself of the responsibility stating that the matter falls in Center’s jurisdiction. This itself indicates how much the government cares about the insult to Shivaji Maharaj, Shri Vatkar said.
