Muslim population ‘alarming’ : Yogi Adityanath, Sakshi Maharaj demand for Uniform Civil Code

The rise in Muslim population in the past decade “is an alarming and dangerous situation for the country,” claimed BJP’s leader and Gorakhpur MP, Yogi Adityanath Wednesday, a day after the Registrar General of India released the Census 2011 data on Population by Religious Communities.

This rise — a national average of 24.6 per cent between 2001 and 2011 as against Hindus’ 16.8 per cent — prompted Adityanath and another controversial BJP leader, Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj, to reassert their demand for a “Uniform Civil Code” and formation of laws to control population.

“The central government must take steps now to implement the Uniform Civil Code and ensure that the slogan of ‘hum do, hamare do’ is applicable to people of all communities,” Adityanath said while speaking to The Indian Express. He went on to assert that the increase in population of Muslims “on such a high rate” poses a “dangerous situation”, and would lead the country towards a “population imbalance”.

“If the Muslim population continues to increase at the same rate, there will be a situation of population imbalance… after 50 years, which may repeat the unfortunate tragedies like division of the country (1947) and migration of Hindus and Sikhs from Kashmir (1990),” he claimed, and added that both the incidents were “results of population imbalance”.

Sakshi Maharaj called out to the Muslim clerics to “have a larger heart”. “They (clerics) should also feel concerned and issue ‘fatwas’ like they did for the celebration of Independence Day at religious educational institutions to show their affection for the nation,” said the leader who had, in the past, exhorted Hindu families to “give birth to at least four children to protect Hinduism”.
