Husain’s pictures lack rhythm, melody and harmony

Chaitra Shuddha Panchami

Pune:  "M.F. Husain’s pictures drawn in the name of art showing the Deities in nude and obscene postures are in fact the pictures that lack rhythm, melody and harmony in the art of painting. Drawing such pictures is akin to a dog barking or a donkey braying in a vocal musical concert and declaring how brilliant vocal singer it is!" These are the words of a renowned painter Shri Ravi Paranjape who was speaking on the topic ‘Music and Painting’ in the 5th anniversary programme of an organisation dedicated to music, ‘Swaramayi Gurukul’ in Pune.  He showed to the audience a slide show of Husain’s pictures of Shri Durgadevi and a tiger and said as such pictures get encouragement and acclaim from the critic, they get overwhelming praise. He added, "It is unfortunate that such pictures are drawn in the name of ‘abstract painting’ lacking rhythm, melody and harmony and they are sold for crores of rupees. Even if I am stamped as a ‘traditional painter’ due to expression of such views, I am happy to accept it." (Congratulations to the artist Shri Ravi Paranjpe for expressing bold views without paying heed to the criticism of the pro-Husain lobby. – Editor)
