The government-run Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) has decided to import beef from Karnataka to tide over the current shortage of red meat in the state, a senior official said today.

The current impasse between the traders and right wing organisations has led to shortage of beef in Goa, with majority of the meat shops closing down since last fortnight.

The first consignment of beef would arrive in the state on coming Saturday, GMCL chairman Lyndon Monteiro told PTI today.

“We have tied-up with the cold storage association in the state which has agreed to give us their facilities to stock the meat. The state’s entire requirement would be met with the imports, till we get a solution,” he said.

The GMCL has procured air-conditioned vehicles to transport beef from across the state borders which would be sold through different vendors.

The state-run corporation’s abbatoir has been left without any work as NGOs have been objecting to slaughtering of animals.

Around 30 tons of beef is consumed in Goa per day and the demand touches 50-ton mark during the tourist season, Monteiro said.
