Police arrested 30 Hindu Munnani members for conducting ghar wapsi (homecoming) event at Thudiyalur, near Coimbatore, on Friday evening.

Coimbatore/Chennai : Police arrested 30 Hindu Munnani members for conducting ghar wapsi (homecoming) event at Thudiyalur, near Coimbatore, on Friday evening. Four members of a Christian family were “reconverted” to Hinduism at the event. The incident comes close on the heels of Christian religious heads condemning the sudden spurt in reconversions in Tamil Nadu.

The Hindu Munnai members had planned to conduct the programme at a temple in K Vadamadurai near Thudiyalur, but were denied permission by police. “We did not invite anyone to join Hinduism. People approached us seeking to reconvert to Hinduism, and we helped them,” said D Thiyagarajan, Coimbatore north district secretary of Hindu Munnani. A case was registered under Section 151 (preventive detention) of the CrPC and those arrested were let off within a few hours.

The Hindu Munnani members alleged that people were being lured to convert to Christianity and such forcible conversions should be prevented in future. T Ganesh, 30, a car driver, voluntarily converted to Christianity three years ago, and changed his name to Alwin. His daughter Dhikshiya became Angel, mother Shantha became Stella and his younger sister’s son Prasanth was named Yabesh. Hindu activists said the family faced discrimination after conversion and decided to reconvert to regain the lost respect.

Hindu Makkal Katchi, another Hindu outfit, held a similar programme in Chennai last week, evoking criticism from minority groups. A total of 18 dalit Christians, including seven schoolchildren, were reconverted at a temple at T Nagar amid fanfare.

Church of South India (CSI) moderator G Dyvasirvadam said the conversions were personal acts of faith and a matter of heart and faith. “Conversions are inevitable. But why use the term ghar wapsi and provoke the people of other religious and cause unrest. It is unfortunate,” Dyvasirvadam told TOI. The CSI is holding talks with other denominations about meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek protection for minorities.

The minority leaders fear that reconversion would polarize communities and such activities should be curtailed immediately. Quoting Article 25 of the Constitution, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi MLA M H Jawahirullah said that any Indian citizen is permitted to preach, profess and practice any religion of his or her choice. “But ghar wapsi is tainted with coercion and inducement. Now the members have been caught red-handed, and I appreciate the state government for taking right action against them,” the MLA said.
