Chennai : Peeved at Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha’s plans to install statues of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse at 17 places in India, a Gandhian moved the Madras high court to stop consecration of the first Godse memorial at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on January 30.

However, pointing out that Meerut fell outside Madras high Court’s jurisdiction, the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh dismissed the PIL on Tuesday.

In the PIL, Gandhian R Kannan Govindarajulu said he and others were shocked by the Hindu Mahasabha’s bid to portray the assassin of the Father of the Nation as a patriot and martyr.

Govindarajulu had included the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh and the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, besides its Tamil Nadu unit, as respondents.

Noting that the entire nation was hurt by the plans of certain groups to spread anti-Gandhian thoughts and values, the PIL-petitioner said such moves would incite law and order trouble all across the nation, including in Tamil Nadu.
