Imran became Devendra to marry millionaire Hindu girl, arrested

Love Jihad is now taking more deceitful and sinister turns. In the latest incident of its kind in Valsad in Gujarat, a Muslim youth has been arrested on charges of marrying a Hindu girl after adopting a different name, and also embezzling a crore of rupees.

According to the police, the accused Imran Mohammad Rafique Sheikh is already a married man and a father of two kids.

From Imran to Devendra

The victim girl is the daughter of a retired railway official and is herself a teacher at a school. She had reportedly struck acquaintance with an individual who called himself Devendra Singh Rathod, who police say is none other than Imran Shaikh. When Shaikh came to know that the girl’s father is a retired railway official and owns property worth a few lakh of rupees, he had no hesitation in weaving a fraudulent web of amorousness to entrap the girl.

Imran then posted pictures of himself on Facebook under the fictitious name of Devendra Singh Rathod and also created a fake ID. After striking up a friendship with this girl, Imran then proposed marriage to her, lying to her parents that he was pursuing an MBA from Pune whilst also working for a finance company based at Bhopal. And soon enough, he also arranged for a couple to masquerade as his parents and approached the girl’s family to finalize dates for their “wedding”.

Bridegroom minus the groom’s party

What then followed is truly bizarre. According to the girl’s family, Imran Sheikh reached their place at Valsad on December 26, 2009, dressed as a bridegroom but all alone, with no marriage party or even family members. When the girl’s father asked him about this, Shaikh, masquerading as Devendra sold them a tale that his grandmother had expired only recently, and “according to his family’s custom”, they wouldn’t venture out for a month and half. He was also not allowed to take his newly-wed wife to his home for the coming one year.

The girl’s parents and family apparently fell for this story and her marriage to the fraudster went ahead. The girl’s family members now say that apart from ornaments and jewelry, Imran Sheikh also took away Rs.1 crore worth property under the pretext of starting his own business. When his real identity was blown, he began threatening the girl and her parents with murder. The girl lost little time in informing her parents and the police, loding an FIR against Imran Shaikh. He was arrested on Tuesday at the Godhra railway station.
