British envoy’s remark on religious conversion sparks debate in Nepal

The British Ambassador in Nepal, Andrew J Sparkes’s remark on securing the right to change religion and right to proselytise has drawn the attention of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.

Andrew J Sparkes, British Ambassador in Nepal’s mentality has been exposed as he wants huge conversion of Hindus to Christianity for a rapid demographic change in Nepal.

The fourth largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA), Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-Nepal) delegations met the PM on Sunday at his official residence in Baluwatar and expressed the party’s dissatisfaction over the remarks made by the British Ambassador claiming the provisions of religious conversion in forthcoming new constitution in Nepal.

Consequently, PM Koirala responded saying that he would acquire official information on the matter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

RPP-Nepal Joint-spokesperson Mohan Shrestha said the PM had assured them that if necessary, he would summon the Ambassador and make him aware about not making public remarks on such sensitive issues.

Ambassador Sparkes, on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on December 10, had written an open letter to the lawmakers saying, “We encourage you to ensure the rights to change religion.”

Chairman Kamal Thapa of Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal has deplored what he called ‘naked intervention of the western powers’ in the internal matters of Nepal.

Thapa appeared at a press meet organized by the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu, Saturday December 13, 2014—a day after a English daily published an open letter of British Ambassador James Sparks openly asking Nepal’s parliamentarians to preserve the right of conversion in the country.

Ambassador Sparkes letter was first published by an English language daily December 10, 2014.

In his open letter entitled ‘Letter to sabhasad-jyus’ Sparkes writes, “We encourage you to ensure that the right to change religion is protected, and that the right to hold opinions and to express them freely will remain strong”.

Drawing a section of media into controversy said Thapa “Under the influence of funds provided by the INGOs some media have been demeaning the Hindu religion”, he said.

He added, “Granted that they have provided a few million dollars to us but that does not allow them to interfere in our internal matters.

“How could they instruct us to write this and remove that from our constitution,” he asked.

Prime Minister of Nepal Sushil Koirala on Sunday told a visiting delegation from RPP-Nepal to inquire about remarks of British ambassador on protecting the right to religious conversion in the new Constitution.

According to RPP-Nepal Spokesperson, Mohan Shrestha, Mr. Koirala assured them that he would seek information on Ambassador Andrew Sparkes’ call from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and if necessary “summon him for clarification”.

In an Op-Ed article on Republica daily, titled Letter to sabhasad-jyus on December 10, 2014 on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the British ambassador to Nepal called for protection of the rights of all kinds of minorities, among others.

“We encourage you to ensure that the right to change religion is protected, and that the right to hold opinions and to express them freely will remain strong,” Mr. Sparkes wrote.

On Saturday, RPP-Nepal chairman Kamal Thapa objected to the remarks, terming it an interference in Nepal’s internal matters. RPP-Nepal is a pro-Hindu party, advocating a return to Hindu Rastra and Hindu Adhirajya (Hindu Kingdom) in Nepal.

Meanwhile, the RPP-Nepal submitted a memorandum to PM demanding a public holiday on Poush 27, celebrated as Prithvi Jayanti. Maharaja Prithvi Narayan Shah is believed as the maker of united Nepal as a Hindu Rashtra and Hindu Kingdom.

Several protest rallies were marched out in Kathmandu and others cities against the anti-Nepal, anti-Hindu and pro-Christian stand of the British envoy in Nepal. Public demanded the immediate displacement of  Andrew J Sparkes from Nepal.

Most of INGOs and the member countries in European Union, working in Nepal are hatching a big conspiracy of high conversion of Hindus into Christianity only to destroy the Hindu identity of Nepal.
