Is it right to allow brutal, cruel slaughtering of cows in India where people treat cow as mother ?

Kartik Shuklapaksha Pratipada, Kaliyug Varsha 5116

Demand for ban on cow-slaughter is not made only by religious people; nor is it sentimental. It has been created over several years of experiences gained through Indian life style, unscientific thinking, examples from science and to what extent animals should be tortured for satiating human hunger. All such things are required to be thought over. Whole world became sensitive towards the issue of preserving environment; same earnestness is required even for ban on cow-slaughter.

1. A human being is not created as non-vegetarian, naturally or by nature.

If one thinks from viewpoint of science, man is vegetarian and he is not non-vegetarian naturally or created as such by nature. Considering his dental structure or intestine etc. also, he is not non-vegetarian.

2. If one goes against nature, one has to face its adverse consequences

Cows were fed non-vegetarian food in totally powdered form in England and it was found that those cows became mad after few months; creating a big problem for that country. The incident became known all over the world as ‘mad-cow’; i.e. ill effects of going against the nature had to be faced.

3. There is limit to ability bestowed by nature on human being to digest non-vegetarian food

A vegetarian person has been bestowed ability by nature to digest non-vegetarian food to a certain extent; but it has limits. After 30-35 years of consuming non-vegetarian food, it becomes difficult for a person to digest such food and his health also suffers. It has been experienced by many people.

4. How can an organization, which claims to worry about well-being of all animals, tolerate erection of big slaughter-houses and killing of animals through them ?

Today, there is ban on killing tiger or lion; but there is no ban on killing a cow/ cattle. Is it not a matter of concern ? The nation-wide organization called ‘Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals (PCTA)’ is also not bothered about cows/ cattle. If a cart-driver gets down and whips bulls carrying his cart on a slope, it is punishable under PCTA regulations. When such cart-man can be punished for such act, why is there so much indifference shown by these organizations towards erection of big slaughter-houses ? How can they tolerate killings of animals ?

5. 70 % of export of beef by India to Central-Eastern countries !

Demand for beef is more from central-Eastern countries and 70% of their requirement is met by India where cow is revered as ‘gou-mata’.

6. Cows are not fed or half –fed in slaughter-house, when tears are start rolling down from their eyes; but nobody feels any compassion

Animals are brought to slaughter-house, whipping them on the way or by cramming them in a truck in inhuman manner and they are not given any food for 7-8 days; or only half-fed when tears start rolling down from their eyes but nobody feels compassion towards them. Few pictures of cows with tears rolling down from their eyes have been published earlier.

7. Taking disadvantage of the Constitution and using money-power, cattle in good condition is also certified as useless and those, who oppose such acts, are attacked

Our Constitution has permitted killing of cattle which is useless and non-productive; but taking advantage of that provision and using money-power, even cattle in good physical condition is certified as useless. If any officer raises objection, he is attacked. Earlier, Deonar abattoir was near Bandra railway station. It must be year 1963 or 1964 when an officer of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, who could not see these things, was stabbed by butchers to death. Such atmosphere of terror and fear exists in all slaughter-houses.

8. Most cruel and ruthless manner of slaughtering cows !

8. A. Half-fed calves’ one leg tied in a machine, boiling water sprayed on them, tying them upside down with the help of machine and the main vein near neck of such calves is cut: Calves which are half-fed for 7-8 days are brought near a machine; then hot water is sprayed on them with the intention of forceful flow of blood and softening of skin. These calves are then hung upside down with the help of such machine and the main vein near their neck is cut. Blood starts flowing and it is collected for sale. This blood has demand for industrial use. So much blood is collected in sewage water that once at Delhi, such blood had entered damaged water pipe and through that drinking water pipe-line. In such condition also animals are alive, writhing in pain. After the flow of blood stops, air is filled in calves’ body by piercing a hole for removing skin. Such soft skin has good demand in other countries.

8. B. Demand for calf-leather is high so they are killed cruelly at young age: There is even more cruel manner used for killing. Calf-leather is in good demand. Demand for parts of young animals is more than demand for parts of grown up animals. Their soft (calf) leather, soft meat and rennet cheese made from stomach of calf has more demand and is profitable; therefore, young calves are also killed very cruelly at young age.

8. C. Cattle is killed with two methods known as ‘halaal’ and ‘zatka’, demand increases considerably from other countries, mechanization and need for foreign currency: There are two methods in which cattle is killed; ‘halaal’ and ‘zatka’. ‘Halaal’, this word only suggests that animals are killed by torturing them. Knife is moved on cow’s neck very slowly i.e. instead of killing with one stroke, it is killed slowly. In ‘zatka’ method, the stroke is so severe that animal is killed instantly. It is said that meat of animal killed with ‘halaal’ method is tastier than killed with ‘zatka’ method. ‘Halaal’ meat is more in demand; but an animal is tortured before killing to satisfy human taste-buds. Earlier also, such methods were used but to small extent. Now with mechanization, demand from other countries and need for foreign currency, this method is used more.

9. It is necessary to think about issues like ban on cow-slaughter, ideology created with experiences over thousands of years, unscientific thinking, examples from science and how much trouble should be given to animals for satiating human hunger !

Act banning cow-slaughter should also be passed in Goa.
