Indore (Madhya Pradesh) : Backing the party MLA Usha Thakur’s demand for only allowing youths and men possessing valid identity cards entry into the garba venues, state BJP president Nandkumar Singh Chouhan maintained on Sunday that identity proof checks were must to prevent entry of anti-socials, like banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) elements who are active in the region and can indulge in any misadventure at garba venues.

In Indore on Sunday to participate in the Chunri Yatra organized by local BJP MLA Sudarshan Gupta, the state party chief said they are not against entry of those from a particular community at the garba nights, but proper checking of identity proofs of those entering the venue was a must due to security reasons.

A few days after Indore-III BJP MLA Usha Thakur remarked that no devout Muslim should attend garba, as it amounted to Goddess Durga idol worship which was not in sync with Islam, the state party president said “Garba is worship to goddess Durga in the form of dance, but Muslims believe in one god and they don’t worship idols. Despite this, if they want to be part of the festivity then we are not against it, but we are against entry of elements like SIMI and youths associated with any allied organisation with evil intentions.” Chouhan added that the party is not against Muslim community and recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken in favour of the community and their patriotism. But the party is against appeasement of any community. However, on the issue of love jihad, the BJP state chief evaded any direct reply.

To drive home his point Chouhan said national security is of prime concern to the party and government, but it’s not linked with any particular community. “Most of the terrorists are from Muslim community but at the same time most of the naxlas are Hindus, both are anti-nationals and need to be dealt with strong hand irrespective of their community,” said Chouhan.

Linking the participation of Muslims youth in garbas with ‘love jihad’ BJP MLA Usha Thakur had recently asked garba organisers to ensure that Muslim youths are not allowed to enter garba venues in her constituency, Indore-III during the Navratri festival alleging that Hindu girls are lured by them and converted to Islam as part of the “love jihad” conspiracy to distort the population ratio in the country. However, she retracted from her statements later, saying that she had only asked for proper ID proof checks of all youths and men entering garba venues.
