Bangalore : Israel seeks Indian cooperation to fight both internal and external terrorism which is haunting both the countries. Inaugurating a seminar in Bangalore on Thursday Israel Counsel General Menahem Kanafi called for more cooperation between Indian and Israel to fight terrorism within and outside.
He said both the democracies in the 21st century find themselves battling unseen and more sophisticated enemies.
“If the 20th century was riddled by wars between States, the 21st century is augured in by the horrific events of the September 9, 2001 and 26/11. The battlefield has changed. The rules had changed. But the goal remained the same protection of our citizens, our state and indeed our very way of democratic life,’’ he added.
Kanafi stressed the need to evolve strategies to fight more sophisticated and changing enemies.
“As both India and Israel have experienced in the last decade, it is no longer enough to firm up your borders and hope for the best, terrorists infiltrate in ever more creative ways and on occasion even influence our own populations to assist and abet. We are almost always one step behind the forces of darkness.’’
Stating that cooperation between Israel and India has great potential to fight against terrorism, he said,’’We are both dealing with essentially similar, if practically different, threats. We can each learn from the others experience and work together to derive new, innovative solutions to mitigate these dangers.’’
Kanafi said India and its industries were natural partners to exploit technology to fight all the threats. Israel, which opened its Consul General office in Bangalore, has also set up a joint Research and Development fund —its kind Israel partnering with an Indian State which provides up to 50 per cent of the R&D costs of a project involving an Israeli and a Karnataka firm.
