A ‘converted’ husband and his Hindu and Muslim wives

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) : A Hindu woman in Bhopal has accused a Muslim woman of marrying and converting her husband. And after the Hindu wife did not agree to a judicial separation, the man has proposed that he was ready to divide his time between the two women.

In a complaint to Madhya Pradesh State Commission for Women, Amrita Advani of Bhopal alleged that her husband Amit, 28, was wooed by Firdaus, 35, with expensive gifts and the two disappeared on June 25 with her four-year-old daughter. Firdaus too has a son from a previous marriage.

Advani approached the Gautamnagar police who, however, refused to register an offence on her complaint that Amit had kidnapped their daughter. Arguing that the child had gone with her father, they filed a “missing person/s” complaint.

Amrita approached the women’s commission alleging it was a case of “love jihad”. The commission asked the police to investigate. Had it been only a love affair, the commission said, Amit would not have taken his daughter along. Amit and Firdaus were traced to Sarkhej locality of Ahmedabad after the police found he had withdrawn from an ATM three times after July 25.

In her complaint, Amrita had alleged that Amit had converted and also converted their daughter for money. Amit and Firdaus had rented a flat in Sarkhej and were looking for work when the police reached them and brought the couple and the two children to Bhopal on Friday.

SP Arvind Saxena said there was no criminal case to be filed after the four-year-old was returned to her mother. Commission chairperson Upma Rai, who retired Friday, refused to discuss the controversy.

The case was referred to Mahila Police Station, Bhopal, where a counsellor tried to strike a compromise among Amrita, Firdaus and Amit. Counsellor Rita Tuli told The Indian Express that Amit a.k.a. Ayaz Khan wanted a legal separation but Amrita was not ready. Tuli said Amrita sought two days’ time to think over Amit’s proposal that he would divide his time between the two women.

Firdaus, who ran a beauty parlour, told Tuli that her parents and other relatives had severed ties with her after her marriage to Amit. Tuli said Amit and Firdaus’s husband knew each other. She said Firdaus and Amit had, in fact, begun their relationship before his marriage to Amrita five years ago.  Firadus’s first husband is now deceased.
