Lucknow : BJP leader Rakesh Kumar Rastogi from Uttarakhand was found dead in his car under mysterious circumstances in Bareilly on Sunday, making him the third casualty in a spate of attacks on party's leaders in Uttar Pradesh.

The body of the slain leader, who was missing for the past few days, was lying below the car seat, and the killers had decamped with the vehicle's key.

There were also deep injury marks on his body, which suggest that he was stabbed with sharp weapons.

Rastogi's murder makes it fifth such incident to have taken place in UP in the past fortnight.

Earlier, two other BJP leaders have been murdered; an MP was attacked, while the mother of another party leader was shot at. The BJP alleges the ruling Samajwadi Party was behind the attacks.

  • BJP leader Vijay Pandit was shot dead by criminals in Dadri area last week.
  • Another BJP leader Om Veer Singh from Muzaffarnagar was killed by goons last Tuesday.
  • BJP MP from Fatehpur, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, was attacked on June 14 along with her supporters at a private function, according to an Indian Express report. Jyoti alleges that the SP wants to kill her to gain a political mileage. "They attacked because they wanted to eliminate me," she was quoted by Indian Express as saying.
  • Devendra Sharma, a BJP general secretary for Braj region was attacked on June 15 by a few unidentified youth in Mathura district. The Indian Express reports the youth entered the leader's house at 2 am and opened fire on his mother, Susheela (63), who was critically injured by a bullet shot in her head. She is now reported to be stable.

Apart from leaders, even the BJP workers, too have been targeted. Puneet Singhal, a BJP worker linked to the RSS, was shot at in Bulandshahr on Wednesday.
