Navi Mumbai : Pictures of Deities and great national leaders are printed on the coverings of crackers. When such crackers are burst, the pictures get torn into pieces leading to their desecration. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had, therefore, submitted a representation to 102 sellers of crackers at APMC market, Vashi creating awareness in them on the subject. Some of them, however, continued to sell such crackers; but after HJS activists lodged a complaint with the police, this sale was also stopped.

In ten shops out of these 102 shops, crackers with Deities’ pictures were kept on sale. Seven out of them stopped the sale when HJS activists explained the subject to them while sale of such crackers continued in 3 shops. Mr. Nilesh Joshi, an activist of HJS from Ghanasoli and Dr. Uday Dhuri had lodged a complaint with APMC (Vashi) police station against these vendors. Dy. Police Inspector Chate took immediate note of the complaint and instructed his staff to raid those shops. The sellers hid crackers with pictures of Deities on seeing police vehicle; therefore, police could not get anything during the raid. Later, police took into custody one of the vendors, Mr. Kanhaiyalal for inquiry.

On hearing this news, the office bearers of association of cracker-sellers reached the police station. Senior Police Inspector Mr. Bhong also got the news and reached the police station. He asked the the office-bearers of the Association to give an assurance in writing that desecration of Deities would not take place in future and if it did take place, the Association would be solely responsible for the same and asked them to submit such assurance letter in the police station. As a result, sale of crackers with pictures of Deities and great national leaders has been stopped at APMC market (Vashi) and even in other parts of Navi Mumbai.

For the past 8 years, HJS has been undertaking such drive to prevent desecration of Deities occurring through the medium of crackers. It is observed that the drive has been very successful this year. HJS has made an appeal that its drive would continue for preventing sale of such crackers at other places and people should also avoid buying such crackers.

Newspapers like ‘Dainik Tarun Bharat’, ‘Aapla Vartaahar’, ‘Punyanagari’, ‘Pudhari’, ‘Nave Shahar’, ‘Nava Nagar’ and ‘News Band’ have taken note of awareness created by HJS and published relevant news.
