Goa : 'Diram Tax' on Hindu Temples to be abolished after GMDSM demand

Panaji (Goa) : The state government has decided to abolish 'Diram Tax' levied on Hindu temples since Portuguese regime within next three months.

Revenue minister Francis D'souza assured Gomantak Mandir Mahasangh that within next 3 months ' Diram Tax' will be abolished

Gomantak Mandir and Dharm ik Sanstha Mahasangh (GMDSM) had demanded through a memorandum to the revenue m inister Franscis D'souza abolish ing of the tax .

The memorandum says that, during the time of last Congress government in Goa, in a legislative Assembly session held in March 2011, the then MLA and present tourism minister Dilip Parulekar, then leader of the opposition and present chief minister Manohar Parrikar and former MLA Dayanand Narvekar had demanded that the government abolish the 'Diram Tax' levied on Hindu Temples.

Then Revenue Minister Jose Philip D'sousa had assured the assembly of passing a circular to revert collection of the 'Diram Tax' from temples. "It has proved to be a hollow assurance as 'Diram Tax' is still being collected from the temples", said Jayesh Thali, co-ordinator, GMDSM.

Thali said that according to the information, this tax is applicable to 4 talukas in Goa. It is more than 50 years that Goa is liberated and it is unfortunate that despite this the Portuguese Laws are still not being abolished.
