Pune (Maharashtra):
The younger generation in India has understood that economic progress and violence cannot go together and therefore there have been no riots in India since 1993 which is a good sign, said veteran scribe MJ Akbar.

He was speaking at the function organised by the city organisation Sarhad, where translated books related to Pakistan by various authors were released.

Five books including the translation of Akbar’s book Tinderbox - Past and Future of Pakistan were released. The book has been translated by Rekha Deshpande and titled ‘Jwalagrahi Pakistan’. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was the chief guest.

Akbar said the reason for instability in Pakistan is because it was created for Islam and not for Muslims. India sustained because of its secularism and multi-cultural approach, he added.

He said that Indians, including Muslims, will not tolerate the thought of giving away Kashmir to Pakistan just because majority of its population is Muslim.

“Religion was not and is not at the core of this nation, it’s secularism that makes India what it is,” he added.
Chavan said engagement with Pakistan economically and culturally will help curb misunderstandings.

Sarhad has started a project of translating and publishing books on India and Pakistan under Sarhad Research Centre for Conflict Resolution and Peace.
