Margao (Goa): Launching its second phase of agitation from the Lohia Maidan on Saturday, the Bharitya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) has demanded that the government immediately roll back the decision on medium of instruction and warned that MLAs not supporting the ongoing movement would be defeated in the coming Assembly polls.

The message from the dais was clear – either take back the MoI circular or the people will throw out the government.

Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat and PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao came under attack from the BBSM leaders, who have vowed to continue the movement till the decision is reversed and status quo maintained.

BBSM stalwarts, including convenor Shaishikala Kakodkar, Adv Uday Bhembre, Prashant Naik and Subhash Velingkar called upon the people to mobilize the masses and vote against the MLAs and Ministers who are supporting English medium.

Prashant Naik said that the Congress will not win more than five seats if the circular is not withdrawn immediately. “People will see how Ravi Naik, Babu Kavlekar, Agnelo Fernandes and others will get re-elected from their constituency”, he said.

Adv Anacleto Viegas said Goans would meet the same fate like the Anglo Indians in Mumbai if the people do not support the local language and culture “Only local language and culture can protect the state’s identity and not English language”, he added.

Collem (Goa): Activists of Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) burnt copies of the MoI circular at Collem market and also prayed to Lord Dudhasagar to get the State government to do away with grants to English medium primary schools in the State.

Those who took part in the prayer meet included Vishnu Surya Wagh and Pundalik Naik, educationalist P Nadakarni , Prof Purnanand Chari, Fr Ataide, Principal Atmaram Kudachadkar, Collem Deputy Sarpanch Naresh Shigaonkar and about 200 residents, which included parents of students from 13 primary schools in and around Collem.
