Afzal's mercy plea will decide India's future: RSS

October 30, 2006

BHOPAL: Alleging that any decision on mercy plea by Mohd. Afzal, sentenced to death for attack on the Parliament, will 'be a political one', RSS on Friday claimed that the outcome will shape country's future.

"Any decision on the mercy plea by Afzal will be a political one, and not legal. The cabinet will take a decision on it and President will have to give his verdict accordingly," RSS executive committee member Ram Madhav said at a seminar here.

"It is surprising that two chief ministers have spoken for a convict, even before he had sought mercy," he claimed adding "one former chief minister went to the extent of saying that if Afzal is hanged, the country will have to face the consequences."

"Terrorists cease to enjoy a citizen's rights. How are the people talking about rights of Afzal?" he asked.

A petition by Afzal's wife favouring his mercy plea was widely talked about, but no one speaks about submissions made to the President by relatives of the seven persons killed in the attack on Parliament, the RSS leader claimed.

While the judiciary has delivered its verdict, political brass have to deliver its, he said. "Decision of Afzal's mercy plea will decide how India will shape up in future," Madhav claimed.
