विक्रम संवत अनुसार कार्तिक अमावस्याका दिन दीपावलीका एक महत्त्वपूर्ण दिन है । दीपावलीके इस दिन धन-संपत्तिकी अधिष्ठात्रि देवी श्री महालक्ष्मीका पूजन करनेका विधान है ।

धनत्रयोदशी' दिनके विशेष महत्त्वका कारण यह दिन देवताओंके वैद्य धन्वंतरिकी जयंतीका दिन है । धनत्रयोदशी मृत्युके देवता यमदेवसे संबंधित कात है । यह कात दिनभर रखते हैं । कात रखना संभव न हो, तो सायंकालके समय यमदेवके लिए दीपदान अवश्य करते हैं ।

वसुबारस अर्थात गोवत्स द्वादशी दीपावलीके आरंभमें आती है । यह गोमाता का सवत्स अर्थात उसके बछडेके साथ पूजन करनेका दिन है ।
