Why is it said that unity is strength in Kaliyug?

1. Reasons for opposition to kshatradharma sadhana

1.1 Psychological

If one sits still, the air does not offer resistance. But when one starts walking there is slight air resistance which increases with running. Similarly those doing a small amount of spiritual practice encounter less opposition whereas those undertaking spiritual practice to a greater extent are offered more opposition.

A. Greater opposition for spiritual practice done for the sake of society rather than for individual spiritual practice: The chances of opposition to individual spiritual practice such as performing ritualistic worship, reading holy verses, etc. are slim in comparison to the spiritual practice of attempting to turn the entire society to Spirituality. In the latter, opposition from certain sections of society is inevitable. When you preach to society to ‘destroy evildoers’ you will certainly face greater opposition.

B. Efforts by rationalists to create intellectual confusion: They say, ‘The concept of God does not exist’. Scientists too try to emphasise that concepts such as God, etc. are outdated and should be forgotten.

(Refer to the point ‘Meaningless rationalism’ in ‘Science of Spirituality: Vol. 21 - Introduction to Spirituality and Individual Spiritual Practice’ for details.)

C. Opposition to the mode: When we talk about ‘destruction of evildoers’ instead of understanding the meaning, the reasons behind it and the various modes of destroying evildoers such as physical, psychological and spiritual the following types of opponents criticise us.

  • 1. Those who have actually not encountered evildoers: In this context the thoughts of an American psychiatrist are noteworthy. When the court sent any criminal for evaluation to him he would in his report state why he had become a criminal and recommend that the police and the court should view his case from a humanitarian angle. Consequently several criminals who had committed crimes such as murder, rape, etc. were meted minimal punishment. Instead the judge would pass strictures on the police for physical harassment of the criminals. The police would get annoyed with the doctor and remark, “You would do the same if you were in our place.” After hearing this several times the psychiatrist felt that he should understand the viewpoint of the policemen and hence joined the police force. In his book he writes about what he experienced when he had to combat a criminal -

When you are face to face with a criminal with guns pointing at each other you have no time to think why a criminal became so. Either you shoot him or he eliminates you. Under such circumstances it is imperative that you shoot first.

  • 2. Those who sit in ivory towers and preach what society should do: They being inexperienced, their talk is meaningless.

  • 3. Those who indulge only in theoretical discussion: Will such people who ask questions like ‘Whom shall we call evildoers?’ say so if there is a theft in their homes or their daughters are raped? But if the same happens to others they are able to discuss it theoretically as per the principle that ‘Another’s sorrow is less intense’.

A dog lover who raised an outcry against the catching of stray dogs by the municipality changed his stand to ‘Stray dogs should be killed’ after his wife was bitten by a stray dog.

  • 4. Those who have not realised the relationship between evildoers and their evil nature: Some people putting on philosophical airs say, “Do not destroy evildoers. Destroy their evil nature”. They do not realise that evildoers and their evil nature are inseparable. If this was not the case then incarnations like Rama, Krushna, etc. would not have had to slay evildoers.

1.2 Spiritual

A. Subtle bodies of those following the Charvak (atheist) philosophy assist those opposing seekers. (On the other hand, subtle bodies of seekers help other seekers.)

B. In the ancient times demons used to interrupt sacrificial fires (yadnyas) undertaken by sages. Even today the subtle bodies of demons pose obstacles by operating through the medium of another being. (These obstacles are overcome by the Guru and God.)

2. Overcoming opposition

Remember that we too are facing opposition, articles against us are being published in newspapers. Despite that our mission is expanding day by day! Till today who has not faced opposition? Saints and even incarnations of God have faced opposition but They have vanquished it. We too will do the same with the grace of saints and God and emerge victorious.

(Experiences about obstacles faced when spreading Righteousness and how they have been overcome with the grace of the Guru are given in ‘Spiritual Experiences of Seekers: Vol. 6’.)

3. Types of spiritual practice for destroying evildoers

There are three types of spiritual practice for destroying evildoers namely physical, psychological and spiritual. Just as in the Bharatiya war where soldiers in the infantry, those in chariots and those in palanquins atop elephants fought against their counterparts, so also it is deemed proper to fight on whichever plane, physical, psychological or spiritual that the enemy chooses to fight. Thus spiritual energy is not unnecessarily wasted. Though Shrikrushna could kill everyone with a mere resolve yet He fought His enemies with fist fights (mushtiyuddha) and archery and slew them. The Guru guides from time to time about the time and the method to be used to fight different people.

3.1 Physical

Only 5% of the crusade against evil will be of a physical nature. 5% of seekers will need to undergo training with weapons. The Lord will provide the weapons at the opportune moment through some medium. The following are necessary for a physical battle.

  • A. Physical strength: Physical exercise proves to be useful in this regard.

  • B. Unity: Refer to the point ‘One who can work unitedly’. The comparative importance of the requirements necessary for the physical battle is as follows.

Requirements for the fight Importance %
1. Good physique 20
2. Chanting The Lord’s Name* 50
3. Other spiritual practice 30
Total 100

* It does not matter if one is not used to shooting. When one shoots along with chanting of The Lord’s Name the bullet certainly strikes the target due to the inherent power in The Lord’s Name.

3.2 Psychological

We will have to fight 30% of the battle on a psychological plane. For that we will have to go from door to door and preach regarding spiritual practice. This helps to augment the sattva component in society and has an effect on some evildoers. The raja and tama components in them begin to decrease. Once this occurs their temperament begins to change. The example cited below will illustrate this better. Once a criminal from one of the big underworld gangs in Mumbai in a highly intoxicated state staggered into a temple where our satsang (spiritual meeting) was being conducted. He heard the discourse partly. Apart from this due to the sattva component of the 10-20 people attending the satsang the raja and tama components in him decreased. When he awoke the next morning he was a changed man. Then he went around the village trying to convince the people to attend the satsang. But fearing him people quickly shut their doors on his face. Then he folded his hands in obeisance and stood in front of every home pleading, “I am no longer the man I was before. I have come to tell you something good about God. Please give me a chance. A satsang is being conducted in our village. Do attend it.” When people heard his plea they opened their doors a little and saw that he was really pleading before them. Thus by preaching about spiritual practice on a psychological plane we can bring about changes in evildoers. However we should not have expectations in this regard. Who are we to change people’s minds when even Rama and Krushna could not change the minds of evildoers like Ravan, Kansa, etc. and eventually had to slay them? Changes will occur if they are so destined. We only have to continue our efforts.

3.3 Spiritual

65% of the fight will be fought on a spiritual plane. It will be as follows.

A. Resolve (sankalpa) for destruction of evildoers: Now if you say ‘Let the evildoers be destroyed’ it becomes a mere wish. It has no value with regard to their destruction. God does not fulfill your wishes. He fulfills the wishes only of His devotee. So first become a devotee. Undertake spiritual practice continuously for a few years. Then God will be compelled to fulfill your resolve.

Some might wonder how there is such a great deal of energy in a resolve. To understand this let us discuss the various forms of energy.

The success of a mission depends on the activity of the various components constituting that activity. Just as an atom bomb is more powerful than an ordinary bomb and the hydrogen bomb is even more powerful so also is the subtle more powerful in comparison to the gross. This point will be illustrated by the example of the various methods employed to destroy the enemy, given below. The more progressive the step, the more effective it is.

  • 1. Physical (gross): Perceiving the whereabouts of the enemy with the five senses, for instance sensing the enemy or his movements, one can shoot him with a gun. However, if he hides behind a structure, motionless then the gunman will not be able to shoot and kill him. Here, only a physical weapon is employed to kill. Different substances are used for different functions, for example different tablets are used as medicine for different disease causing germs, etc. Therefore if mere physical means do not help then they should be combined with subtle means as described below.

  • 2. A combination of physical means and a mantra (subtle): In the ancient times, arrows were shot from a bow only after chanting a mantra. Due to the mantra, the name of the enemy would get recorded on the arrow and no matter where the enemy hid in the three regions (triloks) that is the earth (bhu), nether region (bhuva) and and heaven (svarga) the arrow would certainly kill him. This was due to the energy of the subtle means (the mantra) which accompanied the weapon (the arrow). The motive behind chanting mantras while preparing medicines in the Ayurveda is the same. Similarly when removing a spirit responsible for possession, blackgram (udid), marking nut (bibba), lime, needles, etc. are used to the accompaniment of mantras. Nevertheless, at times inspite of both the physical and subtle being present, one does not achieve much success. At such times a more subtle means, that is more powerful mantras should be used as given below.

  • 3. Mantra (more subtle): In the next step an enemy can be vanquished merely by using a specific mantra, in the absence of gross weapons like guns, bows and arrows, etc. In order to achieve certain things, for instance marriage, riches, etc. various mantras are prescribed. At times, however, even mantras do not yield results. In such cases the next step has to be implemented.

  • 4. The resolve (sankalpa) [even more subtle]: Even a mere thought like ‘May it occur’ in the mind of an evolved person (saint) is sufficient for the occurrence of an event. Nothing else is required. When a resolve like ‘May the evildoers be destroyed’ appears in the mind of a highly evolved seeker it occurs. When The Lord Himself created the universe with a mere resolve can there be anything mightier than it? When one makes a resolve that something should happen, it happens. This is the spiritual level that we seekers should try to attain. We will undertake so much spiritual practice that when the war begins if we make a mere resolve, ‘May the evildoers be destroyed’ then the destruction will automatically occur. We are going to make use of the might of a resolve. Hence everyone including women, children, the aged and the sick will be able to undertake this spiritual practice. ‘The more subtle, the more powerful’ is a tenet of Spirituality. Subtle objects from the gross are powerful. So imagine how much energy the mental resolve to destroy evildoers which is far more subtle than the gross will have!

What is the mechanism of action of a resolve?: For the fulfillment of a mission with a resolve one needs to have a spiritual level of at least 60%. (The spiritual level of an average person is 20% and when the Final Liberation is attained is 100%.) The mechanism of action of a resolve will be illustrated from the following example. Suppose the energy of the mind is 100 units. Each one’s mind is flooded with thoughts, throughout the day. Some thoughts are regarding the office, others about the home, worldly life, etc. A certain amount of energy is expended in every thought and its fulfillment (for instance I have to go to office, I have to do this chore, I have to meet so and so). If one gets hundred such thoughts in a day then a great deal of energy will be expended in them. But if one does not get any thought at all, that is the mind remains in a thoughtless state then if one gets a thought such as ‘May this event occur’ then since all the 100 units of energy are propelling that thought (resolve), it gets transformed into reality. If that thought is about the Absolute Truth (Sat) then one’s spiritual practice is not wasted in it. The Lord Himself fulfills that mission as it is His mission, that of the Absolute Truth. But to achieve this one should undertake spiritual practice such as chanting The Lord’s Name, attending satsangs (spiritual meetings), service and sacrifice for the Absolute Truth and acquire the state when one no longer gets any thoughts about the Great Illusion (asat).

B. Mere presence of saints and Gurus: Saints and Gurus need not even make a resolve. Their mere presence is sufficient to destroy evildoers. This can be beautifully illustrated with the example of the sun which awakens everyone and makes flowers bloom, etc. when it rises. It happens simply with its existence. The sun does not ask anyone to wake up or flowers to bloom. Saints with a spiritual level of more than 90% perform Their mission in this way.

4. Essential qualities in a seeker undertaking kshatradharma sadhana

Some try to destroy evildoers out of emotion. Chitragupta (the deity who maintains records for Lord Yama, the deity of death) keeps a note of this. A give and take account will be created with all the evildoers that one kills. Since in one birth one dies only once obviously one will have to take a corresponding number of births to complete this account by being killed by them. So, do not do anything out of emotion. Saint Tukaram says, ‘We shall preach according to your capability’ meaning we will preach ‘destruction of evildoers’ only to those who are capable of doing it. Others will not be able to execute this colossal task. If they attempt it they will needlessly be killed. The qualities essential for a seeker intending to undertake this spiritual practice are elucidated below. Only such seekers should undertake this spiritual practice.

4.1 From the psychological perspective

A. One who is not emotional in nature: Effective action does not become possible if emotions are aroused. Emotional nature is unwanted due to this reason. Some examples of this are given below.

  • 1. One who is unaffected by personal insults, injustice, loss, etc. and is undeterred in extremely unhappy circumstances or catastrophes.

  • 2. One who has less emotions such as worry about one’s family and society and less attachment for them.

  • 3. One who is aware that he will have to fight even his own relatives and close associates if they are evildoers just as Arjun did.

  • 4. One who does not react towards any individual under any circumstance, that is not feeling anything about any event. However one should bear in mind that indifference does not mean the stance of a spectator (sakshibhav).

  • 5. One who gets disgusted with evildoers in society and feels like taking action against them but is able to observe silently till the Guru orders him to do so.

B. One who has made sacrifices: One who has sacrificed more than 50% of his body, mind and wealth.

C. One who is disciplined and punctual.

D. One who obeys the directives of saints.

E. One who studies and preaches about the spiritual practice of destroying evildoers: One should have a constant desire to preach about this spiritual practice to others and be able to do so. If this is possible then it can be concluded that one has understood the subject thoroughly.

F. One who is enthusiastic and alert

अनिर्वेदं च दाक्ष्‍यं च मनसश्चापराजयम्‌ ।
कार्यसिद्धिकराण्‍याहुस्‍तस्‍मादेतद्‌ब्रवीम्‍यहम्‌ ।। - रामायण ४.४९.६

Meaning: (Angad tells his troupe of monkeys that they should spare no effort in the search for Sita.) I am telling you this because it is said that enthusiasm, alertness and preparedness for the mission help in accomplishing it. - Ramayan 4.49.6

G. One who is fearless: Those who fear physical suffering and death cannot undertake the spiritual practice of destroying evildoers. Fear decreases due to the following.

  • 1. Success is assured when the number of seekers increases tremendously. Then fear vanishes.

  • 2. As the spiritual level rises, due to faith in the Guru and saints, fearlessness develops and the ability to endure physical suffering is also enhanced.

  • 3. Tremendous increase in the spiritual level reduces awareness of the body markedly and then one does not have fear of death.

H. One who feels spiritual love (priti) for evildoers: Due to this when destroying evildoers the emotion that ‘I am punishing the evildoers’ does not get aroused rather one develops the spiritual emotion akin to a dutiful mother punishing her naughty child.

I. One who can work unitedly

  • 1. संहता हि महाबला: ।। - महाभारत ८.३४.७

Meaning: People who remain united become extremely powerful. - Mahabharat 8.34.7

  • 2. भेदे गणा विनेशुर्हि भिन्‍नास्‍तु सुजया: परै: ।
        तस्‍मात्‌ सङ्‌घातयोगेन प्रयतेरन्‌ गणा: सदा ।। - महाभारत १२.१०७.१४

Meaning: When a group divides into factions, its destruction is assured because then the enemy can defeat it easily. Hence social groups should always function unitedly. - Mahabharat 12.107.14

  • 3. न वै सुखं प्राप्‍नुवन्‍तीह भिन्‍ना: ।। - महाभारत ५.३६.५६

Meaning: People who remain divided certainly do not acquire happiness in this world. - Mahabharat 5.36.56

  • 4. सर्वथा संहतैरेव दुर्बलैर्बलवानपि।
        अमित्र: शक्‍यते हन्‍तुं मधुहा भ्रमरैरिव।। - महाभारत ३.३३.७०

Meaning: A swarm of honey bees from a beehive attacks a honey collector and kills him. Similarly if united even the feeble ones can slay a powerful enemy. - Mahabharat 3.33.70

During the Bharatiya war there were mighty heroes - atirathis and maharathis. Each one of them could combat several warriors on chariots simultaneously. No matter how much spiritual practice we undertake how much power will we acquire? We will not be able to destroy more than a few evildoers single-handedly. Hence ‘संघे शक्‍ति: कलौयुगे’ has been advised for the Kaliyug. In other words unity is strength in the Kaliyug. Only then will we be able to eliminate evildoers, not otherwise. The power of evildoers lies in their unity, they have mastered this secret. Criminals operate through gangs. In an office too those accepting bribes like the officer, the clerk and the peon form a gang. That is why together they are able to cheat hundred to two hundred people coming to that office every month. If we unite these hundred or two hundred people against these three employees then is it possible for the three to combat them? We will certainly be able to eliminate them.

A bundle of sticks cannot be broken unlike a single stick. The strength of a thick rope is absent in individual strands of thread. Today’s society has only 5% evildoers and 10% seekers. The remaining 85% are average individuals. The 5% of evildoers being united make the entire society dance to their tunes. If we, the 10% seekers unite then we will definitely be able to destroy the 5% evildoers.

J. One who constantly contemplates and meditates: To face the adverse conditions which will arise in the times to come fearlessness is necessary. Fearlessness of the mind amounts to its dissolution. Dissolution of the mind means getting no doubts about the Sanstha, Spirituality, the Guru or God in the mind. To achieve this, constant introspection, contemplation and meditation are required.

K. One who does not expect to emerge victorious

नैकान्‍तविजयो युद्धे भूतपूर्व: कदाचन ।
परैर्वा हन्‍यते वीर: परान्‍वा हन्‍ति संयुगे ।। - रामायण ६.१०९.१८

Meaning: Victory in a war has never been assured. On the battlefield a brave one either kills an enemy or gets killed himself. - Ramayan 6.109.18

L. One who follows Lord Krushna’s strategy of conduct: Krushna’s strategy of conduct does not mean plotting fiendishly rather it is the ability to transgress even the rules of Righteousness to attain victory for Righteousness (Dharma).

4.2 From the spiritual perspective

A. One who has control over desire to some extent: Seekers should remember that Maruti could defeat even Indrajit (son of Ravan who had vanquished Lord Indra) only because He had mastery over His organs (indriyajit; indriya = organ, jit = victory).

B. One chanting continuously: The action of destroying evildoers becomes a non-action only if done along with chanting of The Lord’s Name, as then it becomes a mere act (kriya). The Law of Karma (Action) does not apply.

C. One who is permitted by saints or Gurus to undertake this spiritual practice: Destroy evildoers if you have been advised by saints or Gurus to do so. Then these acts are not registered in your name. The following example will explain this. In a war, soldiers of one army attacked the soldiers of the enemy and killed many of them. Despite this finally the attackers were defeated. The triumphant enemy took the soldiers of the defeated side as prisoners of war. The soldiers who attacked and killed are not held responsible, rather the officials who ordered the shooting are held guilty. Similarly when one undertakes the act of destroying evildoers upon the instruction of saints or Gurus it is not registered in one’s name. But this is also not registered in the name of the saint or the Guru because They both are the manifest forms of God. Ultimately it being a divine mission it is not registered anywhere.

D. One who perceives the subtle dimension: Subtle means that which lies beyond the five sense organs, mind and intellect. What is perceived by the five sense organs, mind and intellect is not always the truth. Hence in the crusade against evildoers sometimes the righteous also suffer. As it occurred in the French revolution the righteous are also destroyed along with the unrighteous. We will wage a war for Righteousness (Dharmayuddha). The circumstances which now exist in India existed in France in the seventeenth century. But anarchy prevailed there. An evildoer when accused by someone was immediately put to death by the people. India is a land of saints, a land of merits (punya). We will not let anarchy grow here.

When the crusade is on there is no time to wait till the proceedings of the lawsuit from the lower to the high court and then to the Supreme court are completed and the judgement is delivered, as by then it becomes difficult to judge whether a person is an evildoer or not. Decisions have to be taken instantaneously. If one is unable to perceive the subtle dimension beyond the intellect one cannot adopt the spiritual practice of protecting seekers and destroying evildoers appropriately because one cannot really decipher who is good and who is not.

Seekers who can perceive the subtle dimension are now developing throughout the country. We will not trust just anyone who makes an allegation that someone is an evildoer at face value. We will confirm whether the complaint is bonafide or not, by consulting such a seeker. If the complaint is fake then the complainant will be considered an evildoer himself. Such will be the war waged for Righteousness.
