As per the Dharmashastras, it is appropriate to use a Ganesh Idol made of 'shadu clay' or mud for ritualistic worship. The pavitraks (Subtle most particles containing Divine consciousness) of Ganapati get attracted towards an Idol made of 'shadu clay' or mud to a greater extent than to an Idol made of Plaster of Paris.

It is inappropriate to make Idols from coconuts, bananas, beechnut, silver, coins etc. Some of these objects do not dissolve in water after the immersion of the Idol.
